MORE than 360 primary school children took part in the West Devon Cross Country Championships earlier this month. The venue was Simmons Park, Okehampton and the event was organised by OCRA and Okehampton Running Club.

The Year 3/4 girls went off first with Claudia Jones of Meavy leading the rest home. Orla White of St Peter’s was second and Anya McAulay, also of Meavy, was third. The first three back in the year 3/4 boys race were Joshua Allott (Meavy), Soloman Marrison (Okehampton A) and Jayden Semple (Okehampton B).

The winning teams that won through to the School Games County finals on March 22 were both Meavy teams.

Girls – Claudia Jones, Anya McAulay, Sophie Weemys (8th), Polly Coldron (22nd), Jane Horton (23rd) and Olivia Hattan (30th).

Boys – Joshua Allott, George Page (8th), Henry Hall (7th), Oscar Jones (10th) and James Hulbert (15th).

Daisy Rowe of Chagford led the year 5/6 girls home with her team mate Sophia Caylor-Owen, second and Penny Jones of Meavy third.

The boys race was won by Tom Perkins of Bridestowe followed by Henry Hassell of Chagford and Nicolas Maczugowski of St Peter’s.

The winner of the girls team race was St Peter’s – Lara Dix (6th), Tess Hopes (7th), Bea Kinnear (8th), Ella Whitford (9th), Emily Carty (12th) and Amelia Pearce (14th).

They go through to the School Games County finals along with Okehampton Boys – Stanley Woods (5th), Sam Carling (8th), Ciaran Lethbridge (9th), Jacob Gillard (26th) and Kai Bryant (34th)

ORC Andy Vallance was the hare for all four races and members of the club provided marshals and a back marker to make sure everyone finished the race safely. Stuart Lord of OCRA made the presentations after the event.
