OKEHAMPTON Library will welcome author Philip Algar on Wednesday, August 31, to discuss his new book 'Goodbye Old Chap'.

The story is based, in part, on diaries kept by Mr Algar's father, Captain Stanley Algar, while he was in a German prisoner of war camp.

The diaries include a graphic and moving account of his liberation and return to England.

Philip includes detailed background information on events and social conditions, giving a keen insight into a crucial period of history while contextualising his father's story.

All royalties from 'Goodbye Old Chap' are being given to the Red Cross, without whose food parcels, Captain Algar and many other prisoners might have starved to death.

The event is free of charge and starts at the library at 2pm.
