Throgmorton Cup first round

Okehampton Argyle 0

Liverton United 4

THIS match was lost before Okehampton walked on the pitch. With an important league match coming up on Wednesday evening at Exmouth and with the Throgmorton Cup being traditionally dominated by Premier League sides, the managers took the decision to rest four of the normal starting line-up on the bench and they were only to see ten minutes action at the end and Argyle surrendered their unbeaten record this season with the barest of a whimper.

For the first 20 minutes, the Okes held their own and showed how strong their midfield line-up is, even with Luke Alden missing.

Matt Mortimer was also in tremendous form at the back but the forward line with Will Hawking and Adam Mortimer on the bench was totally unable to hold the ball up and the pressure kept coming back on the back four.

On 23 minutes, Liverton took the lead when a deep right wing cross from Shane Shobbrook was clinically headed home by Joe Bushin.

This was still the score at half-time and at this stage, the Okes were still in the game.

However, four minutes into the second half, Dale Chadwick brought down Shobbrook in the box and Liam McAuley made the game safe for the visitors from the penalty spot.

Liverton made many more chances but could not finish them off and Steve Williams missed a great opportunity to reduce the arrears for Argyle when he blaized wildly over the bar with just the keeper to beat.

Then in the last five minutes, Liverton added the icing on the cake with two fine goals from Mike Turner and Joe Bushin.

Matt Mortimer and Rob Clarke were the pick of a hard working Okehampton side, in a game that left many supporters disappointed that they were denied the showdown they had expected.
