A STRETCH of the A30 is set for closure to allow emergency repairs to be undertaken following a serious lorry fire on the road.

Emergency services were rushed to the scene of a fire yesterday morning (October 15), after a blaze broke out in a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) along the A30 near Pennygillam in Launceston. As a result, motorists experienced severe delays and traffic buildup while crews worked to get the blaze under control.

During the incident, a spokesperson from Devon and Cornwall Police said: “Police were called at 11.40am today, October 15, following reports of an HGV on fire on the A30 southbound near Pennygillam.

“No injuries are reported.”

Now, with the situation under control, work is being undertaken to repair the carriageway which was damaged by the fire.

National Highways has stated that a single lane has been opened southbound along the stretch to allow vehicles to pass the scene, however, the organisation has detailed plans for a full closure this evening (October 16), to allow for repair and resurfacing.

A spokesperson from National Highways said: “Following a vehicle fire on the A30 westbound between the A388 and B3254, we’ve reopened lane 2 to allow traffic passed the scene. Recovery has taken place but due to damage to the road, lane 1 will remain closed throughout the day. Resurfacing will take place under a full closure from 8pm this evening.

“We’ve also inspected the footbridge for safety, but no damage was found. This has also reopened.”
