SCOUTS from the 1st South Zeal Scout Group spent the night sleeping in cardboard boxes on Friday to raise awareness of the hardships of the homeless.

The sponsored event raised money for the Salvation Army's work with the homeless in Exeter and for scout group funds.

Scout leader Nicky Glanville said: 'All the Scouts had great fun taking part in a competition to build the wackiest structure to sleep in and cooked all their meals on a camp fire, despite the cold, wet weather.

'The following morning they were up bright and early to help sort and recycle waste paper, aluminium cans and foil brought to the scout hut by parents and local residents to sell for scout group funds. The 1st South Zeal Beavers, cubs, scouts and explorers are all busy trying to raise funds in different ways for urgent repairs and much needed improvements to the Scout HQ in South Tawton.

Funds are also required for new scouting equipment and activities. If anyone can help or would like to make a donation, they can phone Bagheera or Skip on 01837 840574.
